Listening Before Burnout

A Preventative Coaching Approach to Sustainable Leadership & Wellbeing

There is often a long stretch before burnout when a person is still functioning, still meeting expectations, and perhaps still appearing to cope well — while the effort required is quietly increasing.

Listening Before Burnout focuses on this earlier space.

Through coaching, professionals and leaders can make sense of what is changing, understand what may be asking for attention, and explore what might need to shift before strain becomes harder to ignore and the available choices begin to narrow.

The focus is not on waiting for a crisis.
It is on working with what is already there — while there is still space to respond thoughtfully.

Often, Nothing Looks Wrong Yet

People approaching their limits do not necessarily look or feel overwhelmed.

They may still be leading, meeting deadlines, solving problems, supporting others, and doing what is expected of them. From the outside, things may appear to be working.

But the effort required can quietly begin to change.

Perhaps recovery takes longer. Decisions require more energy. Patience becomes thinner. Boundaries are harder to hold. Work that once felt manageable begins to feel heavier.

Sometimes the signals are subtle:

  • Energy — feeling more depleted, even after rest
  • Focus — finding it harder to concentrate, prioritize, or make decisions
  • Emotions — becoming more irritable, discouraged, detached, or reactive
  • Boundaries — finding it increasingly difficult to switch off or say no
  • Meaning — noticing less satisfaction, connection, or sense of purpose

None of these signals, on their own, means that someone is heading toward burnout.

But they can be worth listening to.

Because noticing what is changing gives us an opportunity to respond before simply pushing through becomes the default.

From Noticing to Choice

Noticing is a beginning. The next step is to become curious about what those signals may be telling us — without immediately trying to fix, dismiss, or push through them.

Coaching creates space to slow the process down enough to see more clearly.

Notice

Pay attention to changes in energy, emotions, thinking, relationships, boundaries, or ways of working — including patterns that may be easy to overlook when life is busy.

Understand

Explore what may be contributing: competing demands, expectations, habits, needs, values, relationships, workplace conditions, or patterns that have developed over time.

Choose

Distinguish what can be influenced from what cannot, and consider what response would better reflect both the reality of the situation and what matters to you.

Practise

Turn insight into small, realistic changes — perhaps in how you prioritize, communicate, set boundaries, recover, ask for support, or approach the demands you are carrying.

The goal is not to eliminate pressure or create a perfectly balanced life. It is to develop greater awareness and more choice in how you respond to what your work and life are asking of you.

Over time, this can support greater clarity, self-trust, steadier energy, and a more sustainable way of working and leading.

Two Ways to Work With Listening Before Burnout

Listening Before Burnout can begin with an individual recognizing that something needs attention — or with an organization wanting to support its people earlier.

The coaching itself remains centred on the person: their situation, their needs, and the choices available to them.

For Individuals

A confidential space to understand what is asking for attention.

One-to-one coaching for professionals and leaders who want to make sense of what they are experiencing before stress, depletion, or difficult patterns become harder to change.

You might come with a particular challenge — a demanding role, a difficult relationship, changing priorities, a transition, or questions about energy and boundaries. Or you may simply know that the way things are working now no longer feels sustainable.

We begin there.

For Organizations

Support valued people earlier.

Organizations can sponsor confidential one-to-one coaching for professionals and people leaders navigating sustained demands, significant responsibility, change, or early signs of strain.

Rather than waiting until someone reaches a point of burnout, disengagement, prolonged absence, or departure, coaching offers an earlier opportunity to reflect, regain perspective, and explore what may help them continue to work and lead more sustainably.

The organization provides access to the coaching. The coaching conversation belongs to the individual.

Different starting points. The same principle: earlier awareness creates more room for meaningful choice.

A Reflective, Practical, Whole-Person Approach

Work does not happen in isolation. How we lead, make decisions, respond to pressure, relate to others, and use our energy is shaped by the wider context of our lives — and by the systems in which we work.

My coaching approach makes room for that complexity.

It is reflective enough to look beneath the immediate problem, and practical enough to ask what might actually help. Depending on the person and situation, our work may draw on approaches from leadership development, behaviour change, communication, self-regulation, positive psychology, and systems thinking.

There is no single formula for working or leading sustainably. The aim is to help you understand your own patterns and circumstances more clearly, identify what matters, and find responses that are realistic for the life and work you are actually living.
