{"id":6092,"date":"2024-10-02T05:59:50","date_gmt":"2024-10-02T09:59:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/creeksideinspirations.ca\/?p=6092"},"modified":"2024-10-08T09:25:55","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T13:25:55","slug":"powerful-speaking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/creeksideinspirations.ca\/de\/powerful-speaking\/","title":{"rendered":"Powerful Speaking leads to Freedom"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>From \u201eI have to\u201c to \u201cI will\u201d<\/strong><br><strong><em>Have to &gt; Can &gt; Prefer to &gt; Want to &gt; Intend to &gt; Will<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\" style=\"font-size:clamp(14px, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.455), 18px);\">When was the last time you said \u201cI have to [verb]\u201d. And what was the feeling that accompanied that statement? The thought I am inviting you to think with me today is about the connection between how we speak, how we feel and how much power and freedom we give ourselves:<br><br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Step 1: Obligation | \u201cI have to\u201d \/ \u201cI must\u201d<\/span><\/strong><br>When we say \u201cI have to\u201d or \u201cI must\u201d, we are expressing that there is an obligation, or an external locus of control. We do not have much choice, and our freedom is at best very small.<br><br>My example sentence is <strong>\u201cI have to do the dishes!\u201d<\/strong>. Because I have been there.<br><br>So, as we look at this \u201cladder of powerful speaking\u201d*, or the modal verbs in our language, we tweak what we say and see what happens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\" style=\"font-size:clamp(14px, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.455), 18px);\">A step up towards more autonomy would be \u201cpossibility\u201d.<br><br><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Step 2: Possibility | \u201cI can\u201d \/ \u201cI might\u201d<\/strong><\/span><br>Instead of \u201cmust\u201d, I now choose \u201ccan\u201d, or \u201cmight\u201d: \u201cI might do the dishes\u201d or \u201cI can do the dishes\u201d. Do you feel the difference? The dishes are still dirty, but I give myself a bit of room around the chore.<br><br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Step 3: Preference | \u201cI prefer to\u201d<\/span><\/strong><br>We can step up a bit more, and gain a slightly different perspective (metaphorically speaking), by expressing a preference: \u201cI prefer to do the dishes\u201d (sometimes, after convincing myself that there is even more freedom when the dishes are done, REALLY prefer to do the dishes over procrastinating before hand).<br><br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Step 4: Passion | \u201cI want to\u201d<\/span><\/strong><br>That\u2019s not all though, we can also get up another step to a passionate statement like, \u201cI want to do the dishes\u201d. Can you feel the excitement? And we are not even at the top yet!<br><br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Step 5: Plan | \u201cI intend to\u201d \/ \u201cI am planning to\u201d<\/span><\/strong><br>The second to last step is taking us very close to action. By saying \u201cI intend to doing the dishes\u201d, I can almost feel the warm water and smell the dish soap. Can you as well?<br><br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Step 6: Promise | \u201cI promise\u201d \/ \u201cI will\u201d<\/span><\/strong><br>The last step, with the best view and the most potential is the \u201cpromise step\u201d.
