From a distance, it might look as though something is missing.

But the field is not necessarily lacking anything. It is simply no longer full in the way it was before.

Our Instinct to Fill

We aren’t always very comfortable with that kind of space.

A project ends, and another one takes its place. A meeting disappears from the calendar, and the hour becomes an opportunity to catch up on email. A responsibility is delegated, and before long something else quietly moves into the opening.

Even rest can become something we optimize.

We are remarkably good at making sure that newly available capacity doesn’t remain available for very long.

Part of this is understandable. There will always be things that need our attention, and sometimes a newly opened hour genuinely does need to be used elsewhere.

But perhaps not every opening is a vacancy.

A Field Doesn’t Rush to Become Full Again

Nature offers a different rhythm.

A harvested field doesn’t immediately replace everything that has been taken from it. A tree losing its leaves doesn’t hurry to grow new ones before winter.

There are periods when less is happening above the surface.

We can mistake this for emptiness because we tend to notice what is visible: growth, activity, production, movement.

But space is also part of the cycle.

There is a time between what has finished and what comes next.

And perhaps there is value in not shortening that time too quickly.

Capacity Needs Somewhere to Exist

This matters in our working lives as well.

We often talk about capacity as though it were an unused resource. If an hour becomes available, we can fit something into it. If a person becomes more efficient, perhaps they can take on a little more. If a team stops doing one thing, there is room for another priority.

But if every bit of capacity we create is immediately reassigned, have we actually created capacity?

Or have we simply redistributed demand?

Space is not always unused capacity. Sometimes it is what protects capacity.

A little room in a calendar can make it possible to think before the next meeting. A little margin in a workload can make an unexpected problem manageable rather than overwhelming. A little unclaimed mental space can allow us to notice that something isn’t working before it becomes much harder to ignore.

This is one reason sustainable work cannot be built entirely around maximum efficiency.

A system operating permanently at full capacity has very little room to respond.

Neither do we.

Prioritizing Means Leaving Something Out

There is another reason space matters.

We often think of prioritization as deciding what is most important. Yet priorities can easily accumulate.

Everything remains important. Everything remains on the list. We simply try to arrange it more intelligently.

Real prioritization asks something more difficult of us.

If this matters, what will no longer take up the same amount of space?

For leaders, this can be particularly challenging.

We may remove a meeting but replace it with another. Simplify one reporting requirement and introduce a new one. Delegate one responsibility and immediately take on something that had been waiting in the wings.

The calendar changes. The underlying capacity problem does not. Protecting space can therefore be an act of leadership, not an absence of it.

Before Asking What Comes Next

There is also something more personal about the space that follows an ending.

Sometimes, when a demanding period finishes, relief doesn’t arrive immediately. There may instead be restlessness. Uncertainty. Even a little guilt.

We have become accustomed to being needed, occupied, productive or focused on the next thing. Open space can feel unfamiliar.

Our first impulse may be to ask:
What should I do with this now?

But perhaps there are other questions worth asking first.

What do I notice now that this is gone?
What don’t I miss?
What feels easier?
Where is there more energy?
What becomes visible from here?

And eventually:
What actually deserves this space?

That final question is very different from asking what could fit there. Many things could. Far fewer may truly belong.

A Small Experiment: Protect the Opening

Think of one thing that has recently ended, been completed, delegated, simplified, cancelled, or simply fallen away.

It doesn’t have to be significant. Perhaps a project finished. A commitment ended. A recurring task is no longer necessary. Someone else has taken responsibility for something you used to carry.

Notice the opening it created.

Before automatically filling it, ask:
What would happen if I protected some of this space?

Perhaps ten minutes remain unscheduled.
Perhaps you don’t add another goal just yet.
Perhaps the answer is simply to notice what life feels like with a little more room.

Not forever. Just long enough to listen.

The Space That Remains

The harvested field will not remain empty.

Seasons continue. Conditions change. Something else will eventually emerge.

But the field doesn’t need to know today exactly what that will be.
Neither do we.

Sometimes the space between what has finished and what comes next gives us something activity cannot: perspective. And if we resist filling it immediately, we may begin to see more clearly what is worth carrying into the season ahead.

Reader Take-away

When something falls away this week, notice the space it leaves before deciding what belongs there next.

Seasonal Connection

Last week, in Nothing Is Wasted | What We Release Becomes New Nourishment, we explored how what we release can still become part of what sustains us.

This week, our attention shifts to something release also leaves behind: space.

Before autumn draws us further inward, there is a threshold here—a chance not to rush toward the next thing, but to stand for a moment in the opening and notice what it reveals.

Resources & Further Reading

Oliver Burkeman — Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals
https://www.oliverburkeman.com/books
A useful counterpoint to our tendency to believe that becoming more efficient will eventually give us enough time.
