Stalks dry. Leaves brown. Plants that spent the summer reaching toward the sun begin returning to the soil.

To our eyes, it can look like an ending. But the earth is doing something else entirely. It is recycling what has been. Dead plant matter breaks down. Nutrients return to the soil. What can no longer sustain its old form becomes part of the conditions from which future life can emerge.

Nature does not seem particularly interested in keeping everything as it was. But neither does it waste much.

Letting go is not the same as declaring something worthless

Last week, we explored the art of letting go—and how releasing something can include sadness, nostalgia, or even grief.

There is another layer to that process. – Sometimes we hesitate to let something go because releasing it seems to imply that it no longer matters.

A role we once cared deeply about. A professional ambition that shaped years of effort. A way of working that helped us succeed. A relationship that changed us. Even a responsibility we carried faithfully for a very long time.

If we no longer want—or are no longer able—to carry it, was all that effort wasted?

The harvested field suggests a different answer: Something can have served its purpose without needing to serve that purpose forever.

What did this give me?

In professional life, we often evaluate experiences according to outcomes.

Did the project succeed? Did the promotion happen? Did the organization change? Did our effort produce what we hoped it would?

Those questions have their place. But when a season ends, another set of questions may be more useful:

What did this teach me?

What capacity did I develop because of it?

What did I discover about what matters to me?

What do I understand now that I could not have understood before?

What would I like to carry forward—not as an obligation, but as wisdom?

This is different from forcing ourselves to find a silver lining.

Some experiences are genuinely disappointing. Some cost more than they gave. Some leave us tired, angry, sad, or uncertain.

We don’t have to turn those feelings into gratitude before we are ready. But eventually, we may be able to ask:

Is there anything here that I would like to return to the soil rather than simply throw away?

Even old coping strategies may have something to return

This can be especially powerful when we look at patterns we are trying to change. – Perhaps you have spent years being the person who always says yes. Or the one who anticipates every possible problem. The one who works a little longer because you don’t want to disappoint anyone. The one who keeps things running quietly enough that nobody realizes how much you are carrying.

When we begin to recognize the cost of these patterns, it is tempting to judge them.

Why did I do this for so long?

Yet many unsustainable patterns began as intelligent responses to something we needed.

Being extraordinarily dependable may once have helped you build trust. Perfectionism may have helped you feel safe in an uncertain environment. Taking responsibility may have given you a sense of agency. Staying constantly alert may have helped you navigate a difficult workplace.

That doesn’t mean those strategies need to continue unchanged. – It simply means we can release them without rejecting the person who once needed them.

We can keep the commitment and release the over-responsibility.
Keep the care and release the self-sacrifice.
Keep the discernment and release the vigilance.
Keep the high standards and release the belief that everything must be perfect.

The old form can decompose. Its wisdom can remain.

Composting experience

Compost is not glamorous. It is made from things whose visible usefulness appears to be over: peelings, leaves, stems, plants that have finished producing. And then time and transformation do their work.

Perhaps experience works similarly:
A difficult project becomes discernment about where your energy belongs.
A period of overwork becomes greater sensitivity to your early warning signs.
A role you have outgrown leaves behind confidence you did not have when you entered it.
A mistake becomes humility.
A disappointment clarifies a value.
An ending makes visible something you had been too busy to notice.

We don’t need to know immediately what an experience will become. Some things need to lie quietly for a while before their usefulness changes form.

You don’t have to carry the whole story forward

There is an important distinction here: Learning from something does not mean continuing to carry it.

You don’t have to preserve every responsibility because it taught you something.
You don’t have to maintain every relationship because it once mattered.
You don’t have to remain in every role that helped shape you.
And you don’t have to repeatedly revisit an experience in order to prove that you learned from it.

Perhaps integration is quieter than that. – We take what is still alive. We return the rest. And gradually, there is more room.

A late-summer reflection

This week, rather than asking only What should I let go of?, choose one thing whose season may be ending.
It might be a responsibility, expectation, role, habit, goal, project, or way of working.

Then ask:

What did this once give me?
What has it taught me?
What part of it is worth carrying forward?
And what can I now return?

You may discover that letting go does not erase the past. Sometimes it is precisely how we allow the past to become useful in a new way. – Just like the field does not carry last summer’s plants into the next growing season.

It lets them become soil.

Reader Take-away

You don’t have to carry something forever in order to honour what it gave you.

Resources & Further Reading

William Bridges — Transitions: Making Sense of Life’s Changes
https://wmbridges.com/books/
Bridges makes a useful distinction between external change and the internal transition that accompanies it.
